Perhaps it would have been better for the guy to raise an unholy stink right in the store, making his various points in a way that would have made everyone there see what was going on – and then followed up as was done here, by alerting everyone that this sort of policy seems to exist at this store and perhaps allowing a boycott or other reaction to be developed (urinal stickers about how B&N hates men, selling B&N stock, whatever). If the pattern of discrimination is of great enough magnitude to be useful, perhaps a lawsuit that provides for lots of public airing of the company’s dirty laundry and possible settlements including forking money over to men’s rights groups might have been fun.

It seems the guy from the story sends lots of money at that store, and that’s going to stop. Certainly I won’t be shopping at that chain anymore myself. And that’s the point – as rational, strategic guys we need to hit these things where they hurt without making the evil system we’re fighting stronger. Getting the tacit policy changed or getting discounts on shopping or having a silly clerk or manager fired or transferred won’t make any real difference. Tainting their public image or hitting them right in the pocketbook will.
